Our 65,000-square-foot flagship data center, Mineral Gap, is located on 22 acres in Wise County, Virginia’s Lonesome Pine Regional Business and Technology Park. Known as “The Safest Place on Earth,” Wise is a small, protected mountain community in the state’s southwestern region, and is one of the most resilient and compromise-free areas of the entire East Coast.
Agencies and companies that need secure Virginia colocation services will find that Wise serves as insulation from natural disasters, blackouts and attacks on large population centers. It is strategically located outside the blast zone and coastal flood zone, and away from major population centers and associated threat vectors. The Mineral Gap colocation facility is less than a day’s drive from the Washington, D.C. area, and is conveniently located near a private airport.
In addition, Wise benefits from the Virginia landfall of the 4,000-mile, 160Tb-per-second Marea cable, which adds resilience by bringing the cable ashore far south of the typical New York/New Jersey trans-Atlantic hookups. The cable adds massive capacity for increased connectivity for Mineral Gap customers — a huge advantage compared to other Virginia colocation data centers — since part of Marea connects to nearby high-speed fiber, thanks to the work of the Mid-Atlantic Broadband Communities Corporation (MBC) and LIT Networks.
DP Facilities is committed to transforming the region around Mineral Gap into a secure technology corridor. A number of state government economic programs have identified technology infrastructure as a priority in southwestern Virginia.
Wise County is home for a diverse mixture of Fortune 500 companies, local businesses and professionals, and the University of Virginia’s Wise campus. The school has invested heavily in its programs, including a number of strategic partnerships in technology. The school partners with the Mach37 Cyber Accelerator at the Center for Innovation Technology, and is well-positioned to deliver a high quality workforce.
